What is a Cervical Herniated Disc?

A cervical herniated disc occurs when a disc between the vertebrae of the neck presses on nearby nerves or the spinal cord, causing neck pain that radiates into the arm.

Symptoms

• Neck pain radiating to the shoulder and arm.

• Numbness or tingling in the hand and fingers.

• Weakness in the arm muscles.

• Occipital (back-of-head) headaches in some cases.

How It Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis relies on a neurological examination and a cervical spine MRI to determine the location of the disc and the extent of nerve compression.

When Surgery Is Needed

Surgical intervention becomes appropriate when symptoms persist despite conservative treatment, or when there is muscle weakness or compression on the spinal cord.

Treatment Options

• Conservative treatment and physical therapy.

• Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) to remove the disc and stabilize the vertebrae.

• Other interventions depending on the case.

How the Surgery Is Performed

It is most commonly performed via ACDF surgery, which removes the compressing disc from the front of the neck and fuses the two adjacent vertebrae to restore stability.

Recovery Period

The patient recovers gradually over weeks, following clear mobility and follow-up instructions.

Risks and Complications

There are minor risks that are discussed with the patient prior to surgery based on their individual condition.
